Cremation or burial?

There are many important decisions to make throughout the process of arranging your loved one’s funeral. One of these decisions is whether to choose a cremation or burial.

Cremation

The cremation process usually follows the funeral service. However, some families choose to have the cremation first followed by a memorial service. The process is carried out by a qualified crematorium operator and is normally without family attendance; sometimes however certain religions can witness this process. Only one cremation is carried out at a time. The coffin with body is cremated and the cremated remains are available to you for scattering and/or memorialisation within 48 hours.

Millingtons have three crematoriums located within our chapels and reception centres, two at Cornelian Bay and one at our Mornington Funeral Centre.

On-site cremation ensures that your loved one remains close at hand and in the continued care of those who manage the ceremony.

Following cremation – the cremated remains of your loved one can remain in our care until you are ready.

Burial

Millingtons is in the unique position of now operating cemeteries enabling us to offer you every affordable option in funeral and cemetery service. Our cemeteries are located at Cornelian Bay, Kingston, Cambridge (Eastern Shore) and East Risdon (Eastern Shore).

A grave is normally able to accommodate more than one coffin, allowing 2-3 people to be buried in the one grave over a period of time.

Some cemeteries have lawn and monumental sections, enabling you the choice of either a traditional grave site with a headstone and monument or the lawn grave with either a small headstone or a large bronze plaque. Please view our Memorial brochure here or our Monumental brochure here.

A religious or civil ceremony may be held at one of our Chapels followed by a graveside committal service. Alternatively, we can arrange a service at a church or facility of your choice, again followed by a graveside committal service at a nominated cemetery. We can also arrange a religious or civil graveside service.
